Gwyneth Paltrow, the founder and CEO of Goop, will not be able to recoup the legal fees she paid to defend herself against a lawsuit filed by a retired optometrist, Terry Sanderson. The lawsuit, which stemmed from a 2016 ski resort crash in Utah, accused Paltrow of crashing into Sanderson and leaving the scene without ensuring he was in good condition.

However, in a ruling published on Saturday, a Utah judge affirmed the jury’s verdict that Sanderson was “100% at fault.” As a result, Paltrow won her countersuit, which sought a symbolic $1 and attorneys’ fees. Representatives for Paltrow have not disclosed the amount of money at stake in the legal battle.

The case lasted for seven years and involved expert witnesses and high-resolution animated recreations of Paltrow’s recollections of the crash. The trial became a closely watched celebrity case, with Paltrow’s court battle drawing comparisons to the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case of 2020.

During the trial, Paltrow testified that when the crash happened, she thought she was being “violated.” The case received extensive scrutiny from fans and detractors, with the proceedings broadcast live on Court TV.

After the verdict, Sanderson’s attorneys said they were considering whether to appeal or file for a new trial. Meanwhile, Paltrow and her attorney stated that the countersuit was about principles rather than the dollar amount at stake.
