‘House Of The Dragon’ To Get Shorter Season 2 As HBO Series Eyes Season 3 Greenlight

Last summer, HBO renewed House of the Dragon for a second season without disclosing the number of episodes it would contain. While the initial plan was for a 10-episode arc, the season will now only have eight episodes. Some speculated that this was due to Warner Bros. Discovery’s focus on cost-cutting following a leadership change at HBO’s parent company. However, an HBO spokesperson clarified that the decision to trim the episode count was based on the story’s needs.

House of the Dragon’s creative team had initially envisioned the series running for three or four seasons. However, executive producer-showrunner Ryan Condal and author/executive producer George R.R. Martin took a step back during Season 2’s production to examine the overall narrative flow and determine how to break up the stories season-to-season, including which battles to include and when. They also mapped out Season 3, which might soon be greenlighted, with HBO considering committing to moving ahead with scripts, casting, and production planning for the long term.

According to sources, there has been discussion about expanding the series to four seasons, but the optimal number of seasons to tell the full story is still being debated. In October, Martin mentioned in a blog post that it would take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, which is the story that House of the Dragon follows.

The new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery embraced House of the Dragon, supporting its $200M production with the biggest marketing campaign in HBO’s history, which reached an estimated 130 million people in the US. This led to a successful premiere in August 2022, followed by the season two renewal.
